ABOUT SHAPES

Most of us, when we start drawing, naturally start with the outlines of objects. We call these lines contour lines. We perceive these lines that are around objects and that form the details. It is a very good practice to draw the contour lines of objects, but it is not the fastest and it is difficult to accurately reproduce the object.

Instead of focusing on the contour, we can focus on the basic shapes that make up our object. If we break down the object into basic shapes, our speed and accuracy will improve greatly.

Then we build the object we want to draw from the basic shapes. Then we can work on the contour of the object.

The trick is to learn how to recognize simple shapes in complex objects. You have to retrain your brain to build objects with simple shapes. It takes a lot of practice.

The goal of today’s exercise is to be able to describe complex objects with simple shapes.

Draw objects by drawing shapes first and that builds the object. Once you have the basic shapes outlined, you can move on to details and outlines.

Start with simple shapes first and then work your way up to more complex shapes. Try to ‘build’ the object up with simple basic shapes: triangles, squares, circles, ellipses, etc.

Now don’t worry about tones or shading, just focus on the shapes and finally the outline. As you draw the shapes, pay attention to what you learned in the first two days. Draw with your whole arm and make sure that the lines start from the shoulder and elbow instead of the wrist.

1, Practice drawing objects by breaking them down into basic shapes.

2, After you have sketched the basic shapes, sketch the outline using the shapes you have drawn.
